There’s something about June that invites a deep breath — a pause between projects, a slower rhythm, and a chance to look around at what’s growing (literally and metaphorically).
After a busy spring of events, edits, and creative deadlines, I’ve had a little bit of time out as my parents have been for a visit. We fully embraced tourist mode — exploring the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, taking a windswept walk at Hengistbury Head, wandering past the beach huts, and (finally!) riding the cheerful land train which despite living here now, I have never actually ridden it before. We rounded it all off with a beautiful Sunday lunch at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel — delicious food, warm company, and one of those calming views that makes you want to bottle the moment.
📸 Behind the Scenes: Author Photoshoot Adventures
I’ve also just wrapped up a beachside author photoshoot — not exactly barefoot and windswept in a romantic sense, more like boots on, praying it didn’t rain again, and clinging to my light summer scarf to stop it flying down the beach. At one point I wasn’t quite quick enough to escape the incoming tide, so things got a little soggy around the edges — but honestly, it was such fun.
We were at Solent Beach, near the beautiful sand dunes, and I found myself scurrying up and down them in search of the perfect spot for a photo. Attempting to look poised and professional while trying not to slide down the dunes in my boots definitely added an extra layer of challenge (and comedy). But the setting was stunning, the photographer was brilliant, and I think we captured something really special.
🎙️ In Conversation…
I was recently a guest on a brilliant new podcast, Beneath the Page, where we chatted about the layers beneath a story — character, emotion, memory — and how sometimes the truths we don’t plan on writing are the ones that resonate most. I’ll share the link to the episode as soon as it goes live.
I’ve also had the pleasure of being interviewed for Dorset Life — more on that soon!
📚 On the Road for National Crime Reading Month
June brings with it National Crime Reading Month, and I’m thrilled to be celebrating with a series of events up and down the country. If you’re nearby, I’d love to see you at one of the following:
-
26 June – Tuckton Library, Bournemouth (returning after last year’s wonderful The Good Patient talk, this time to share The Quiet Sister)
-
28 June – Solihull Library
-
29 June – Coventry Library, where I’ll be in conversation with fellow crime writer Paul Gitsham
Meeting readers in person and having those real conversations about stories, characters, and writing life — it’s honestly one of my favourite parts of the job.
Check out my Events page for all the details on upcoming events.
Wherever this month finds you — with sand between your toes, a book in your hand, or just enjoying the longer evenings — I hope June brings you moments of reflection, connection, and quiet joy.
